Yesterday (25March, 2010) more than hundred photographers, photojournalists & social activists participated in the Human Chain. It was not only a symbolic protest by the Bangladeshi photographers against the ban of a symbolic photo exhibition & installation on CROSSFIRE by Shahidul Alam. They also have showed their support against the oppression and raised their voice for “Freedom of Expression”.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us. Thanks to all who couldn’t join but were present in spirit.
It was a great honor to have senior photographer Nahar Ahmed with us.

GALLERY SERVES LEGAL NOTICE ON GOVERNMENT DEMANDING JUSTICE
Drik Picture Library has served a legal notice on the government demanding an end to a police blockade of a photography exhibition on Crossfire.
Lawyers for Drik have written to the Bangladesh Government’s secretary for Home Affairs, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner after police surrounded the gallery gates to prevent people from entering an exhibition on Crossfire by photojournalist and Drik managing director, Shahidul Alam.
In the notice, Supreme Court lawyer Sara Hossain has called on the government to immediately remove the police force from the gallery and allow the exhibition to open. She added that if officials fail to confirm within 24 hours that they would lift the ban, legal action would be taken to secure Alam’s right to freedom of expression.
Police barricaded the gallery shortly before the exhibition was due to open on Monday, 22 March. The action followed repeated phone calls to Gallery staff, including Alam, and a police presence, pressurizing them to stop the exhibition.
After Alam continued with the opening, inaugurated by celebrated Indian writer and human rights activist Mahasweta Devi, on the streets in front of Drik’s premises, police continued to remain in place, preventing people from entering or leaving. Police officers have been stationed at the gates everyday since then, to stop people from entering the exhibition.
Shah Alam, officer in charge of Dhanmondi Thana, first claimed the gallery did not have permission to hold the exhibition. After Shahidul Alam pointed out that the gallery had been holding exhibitions weekly since 1993 and never before required permission, the OC claimed the exhibition would have to be closed or it would ‘cause anarchy’.

এই গানটি রবীন্দ্রনাথের ফাল্গূনী নাটকের অন্তর্গত। আমার অনেক পছন্দের একটি গান। বার বার শুনেছি অনেকের কন্ঠে। সবাই গানটি রবীন্দ্র সঙ্গীত বানিয়েছেন কিন্তু একজন শিল্পী গানটিকে গাইতে পেরেছেন (আমার মতে। সাইমন জাকারিয়াও একমত হয়েছেন আমার সাথে)। তিনি দেবব্রত বিশ্বাস। কিছুদিন আগে তার কন্ঠে এর ইংরেজি ভার্সনও শুনলাম। জানতাম না ফাল্গুনী ১৯১৭ সালে ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ হয়েছিল! ইংরেজি ভার্সনটাও অনেক ভাল লাগল। ফাল্গুনী’র ইংরেজি ভার্সনের নাম The Cycle of Spring যা http://manybooks.net/support/t/tagorera/tagorera2460724607iliad.pdf এখান থেকে ডাউনলোড করে পড়া যাবে। আর এই গানটির ইংরেজি নাম The Songs of Fresh Beauty.

শাহরুখের সাথে আমার প্রথম পরিচয় কবে এটা মনে করতে পারলাম না। সম্ভবত ২০০৭সালে। অল্পদিনের পরিচয়ে তার সাথে আমার সখ্যতা। এরপর ২০০৮সালের পারসোনা’র পিকনিকে হোতাপাড়ায় অনেক মজার একটা দিন কাটে আমাদের। এরপর তার শাহরুখ’স কালেকশনের জন্য ওয়েব (www.shahruks.com) আমি বানাই। তখন একসাথে অনেকদিন আলাপ করি, সাথে ছিল রাজিম আহমেদ: তার সহকারি। সে আমাকে ‘বন্ধু’ বলে সম্বোধন করতো, আমিও। এটা অবশ্য সে সবাইকে ডাকে। আমি ওকে তুমি করেই বলতাম যদিও বয়সে সে আমার অনে..ক বড়।

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ছবিটা তুলেছিলাম এই বছর (২০১০) ১৮জানুয়ারি তার অফিসে। সাথে ক্যামেরা ছিল এবং তার অফিসের লাইটটা অনেক পছন্দের ছিল। সেই লাইটের টেস্ট ছবি এটি।

আমাকে প্রায় সময় এই সদা আনন্দে থাকা মানুষটা ফোন করতেন। তার নতুন শো’রুম নেয়ার সময় ফোন করেছিলেন, সময়ের উল্টাপাল্টায় যাওয়া হয় নাই। তিনি ছিলেন খুব খারাপ একজন ব্যবসায়ী। এতদিন থেকে ডিজাইন করেও নিজের ব্যবসাটা দাড়া করাতে পারেন নি। পারলেন না।

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

তার এই হাসি মিস করব। অনেক বেশী মিস করব।

নীচের ছবিগুলোন তাকে নিয়ে হাসি তামাসা করে তুলেছিলাম। তার ব্যবসায়িক বুদ্ধিকে নিয়ে আমার রসিকতা। বালিঘড়িটি ছিল তার ব্যবসার প্রতীক যা আস্তে আস্তে শেষ হয়ে যাচ্ছে!

 

 

 

ওনার লাক্স-সুন্দরীদের প্রতিযোগিতা নিয়ে অনেক ঠাট্টা করতাম। আহারে আবার যদি করা যেত!

When there was no civilization in human history the ancient Homo Sapience cave people tried to draw images in cave. Their amazing visual thoughts is today’s cave painting. In the ancient time the pictures were not metaphoric. They draw what they had seen. They were the first Environmental Portrait artist. From their work we’re now familiar with the mighty Mammoth or Giant Tigers. And today’s modern Archaeologist proved those gigantic creatures were present in pre civilized period. They’ve fossils of those creatures now.

Apart from the cave people the early painters draw and sketch human portraits on their canvas. Those days solvent people tried to capture their portraits with the help of the painters. Oil-ink was widely used for this work. On those pre historic photographic period painters were the portrait artist for the rich people. Those portraits are still in our museum. So the modern portraiture concept from the paintings where portrait was exact replica of human face and gesture.

From the history of photography early photographers were painters mostly. They adopt photography or photographic technique to reduce their time on drawing human portraits. Photography came to their door as Prometheus with fire. In early age photography was the main tool to draw portraits.

Now in this modern era we’ve so many tools to draw or to capture. As capturing a moment is very easy now so the definition or purpose of photography or any visual arts is changed today. Portraiture of any kind is more metaphoric and dynamic. So today’s Portraiture is not only capturing the right moment and expression but a philosophical explanation of situation and environment and politics. Portraits is not only the reflection of time but also a story now. Behind all portraits there is lots of colorful stories now. Even a footprint of a labor is meaningful now a days because that is the expression of environment belonging

এই লেখার বিষয় আমার উপর অর্পিত। পাঠশালার শিক্ষক রেজাউর করিম মনু’র বরাতে আমার লেখনীতে চলে এল। যেহেতু আমি পাঠশালায় অধ্যয়নরত আছি তাই এই লেখাটি আমার পরীক্ষা। প্রিয় পাঠক আপনারা বিভ্রান্ত হবেন না।

যার হাতে ক্যামেরা থাকে তিনি না চাইলে কখনো ছবি হবে না। মানে কোন একজন ক্যামেরাম্যানের ক্যামেরাগিরি থেকে ছবি বা ফটোগ্রাফ তৈরি হয়। অবশ্য যদি কোন ব্যক্তি অন্ধকারের কোন ছবি তোলেন বা সাদা কোন ছবি তোলেন (কোন ধরনের ডিটেইল ছাড়া) তবে তাকে ছবি বলা ঠিক হবে না। তাই যদি একটু অন্যভাবে বলা যায় ‘আলোকচিত্রায়ন বস্তু অথবা বিষয়বস্তুর চিত্রায়ন নাকি তার উপর আলোকচিত্রীর চিন্তার পরিবেশন?’ তাহলে আলোচনাটা আরো জমে উঠবে।

যেভাবে একটি ছবির ছবি হয়ে ওঠা

ক্যামেরা নামের যন্ত্রের যান্ত্রিক সহায়তায় ফিল্ম অথবা ডিজিটাল মাধ্যমে মানুষ ছবি তৈরি করে। এতে কিছু কারিগরি বিষয় আছে আর আছে ভিউ-ফাইন্ডার দিয়ে দেখে একটা মানুষের বন্দিকরা একটা মূহুর্ত। একটা ছবির জন্মলগ্নে কোন একজনের একটু দৃষ্টির প্রয়োজন হয়, তাই বলা যায় একটা ছবির ছবি হয়ে ওঠাটা নির্ভর করে কোন ব্যক্তির দৃষ্টির পরিবেশনা। আর মানুষের দৃষ্টিপাত চিন্তার একটা অন্যরূপ।

আলোকচিত্রায়নের শুরুর কথা

আলোকচিত্রের শুরুর ইতিহাস ক্যামেরা অবসকিউরার সাথে। তখনকার দিনের পেইন্টাররা কোনকিছুর আকার-প্রকারের প্রজেকশন বুঝতে এই পদ্ধতি অবলম্বন করেছিলেন। পরবর্তিতে এই চিত্রশিল্পীরাই হয়েছিলেন ক্যামেরার অনুরাগী। ক্যামেরা দিয়ে অনেক কম সময়ে মানুষের পোর্ট্রেট করা যেত। ইতিহাসের এই সাক্ষিকে মেনে বলা যায় ফটোগ্রাফি আদতে চিত্রশিল্পীদের ভালোবাসায় সৃষ্টি আর একটি মাধ্যম। বর্তমান সময়ে তাই ফটোগ্রাফি শিল্পকলা হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়া হয়েছে। যেহেতু কোন শিল্পকলা চিন্তার প্রয়োগ ছাড়া তৈরি হয়নি বা হয় না তাই অবশ্যই বলব আলোক চিত্রায়ন আলোকচিত্রীর চিন্তার পরিবেশন।

যেসব আলোকচিত্র বা আলোকচিত্র না

ক্যামেরায় সৃষ্ট সকল ছবিই আলোকচিত্র (কারিগরি ভাবে)। একটি ক্যামেরা দিয়ে যদি একটা বস্তুর ছবি তুলতে দশ জনকে পাঠানো হয় তবে কারো সংগে কারো ছবির মিল পাওয়া যায় না। স্বকীয়তা মানুষের বৈশিষ্ট তাই সবাই ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ভাবে দেখে। এই তথ্য একাধিকবার প্রমাণিত। তার মানে মানুষভেদে একই বস্তুর ছবি ভিন্নতর হয়। তার মানুষের চিন্তাতরঙ্গের তারতম্যে ছবির তারতম্য।

আজকে যারা অনেক বড় আলোকচিত্রী হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত বা যারা এখনো প্রতিষ্ঠা পাননি সবাই কিন্তু তর্কে একটা জায়গায় থাকেন, তা হলো তাদের চিন্তার প্রতিচ্ছবি ছবিতে দেখাতে পারছেন কিনা। আজকের সময়ে আলোকচিত্র অনেক বড় একটা যোগাযোগের মাধ্যম। ছবির উপস্থাপন দিয়ে মানুষ সম্ভাবনা অথবা কোন তথ্যকে অনেক সহজে অন্যের দোরগোরায় পৌঁছাতে পারছে। মানুষের ভাবনার জগতে একটি আলোকচিত্র প্রভাব ফেলছে অনেক অংশে। তাই আজকের দিনে খবরের কাগজে কোন দুর্ঘটনার ছবি দেখলে আর বলে দিতে হয় না সেটি দুর্ঘটনা নাকি আনন্দের খবর। আলোকচিত্র সেই ভাষায় পরিণত হয়েছে। আর মানুষের চিন্তার পরিবেশনার মাধ্যমই তো ভাষা। ভাষা দিয়ে মানুষ চিন্তার পরিসর তৈরি করে।

বস্তুর চিত্র বলে আদতে কিছু নেই

কোন বস্তু বা পণ্যের ছবি তুলতে বললে বা তোলা হলে বর্তমান সময়ে তা আর বস্তু থাকছে না। ধরা যাক একটি বস্তু চায়ের কাপ। যখন চায়ের কাপের ছবি তুলতে কেউ ফরমায়েস করেন বা শখের বসেই তুলে থাকেন কেউ ছবি: লক্ষ রাখেন কিভাবে সেই চায়ের কাপটির উপস্থাপন নান্দনিক হয়। বা ফরমায়েসি ছবি হলে তার উদ্দেশ্য থাকে কিভাবে সেটি অনেক দৃষ্টিনন্দন হয় যাতে ক্রেতা বুঝতে পারে কাপের মাহত্ম। তাই নিছক সাধারন বস্তু কাপটি আর সাধারন থাকে না। অনেক বড় স্টার হয়ে যায় কোন এক ফটোগ্রাফারের কেরামতিতে। এভাবেই আমাদের পুঁজিবাদি সমাজব্যবস্থা চলছে। এই সমাজে বাস করে কোন বস্তু ফটোগ্রাফিকে তাই আমার শুধুই বস্তুর ছবি মনে হয় না। বস্তুর ছবি এখন সুচিন্তিত বাজার বিপণনের অনেক বড় হাতিয়ার।

আমি একজন ফটোগ্রাফার। আমি কোন বিষয়বস্তুর ছবি চিন্তা না করে তুলি না। অনেক চিন্তা করেই তুলতে হয় ছবি।

ভালোবাসি… শুধুই ভালোবাসি…

রূপকথা আমার মেয়ের নাম। ওর এখনো জন্ম হয়নি। তবে হবে কোন একদিন। মেয়ের জন্য এই নামটি রেখেছিল আমার ছোট বোন রুকসি; অনেক আগে… প্রায় ৫বছর হবে। তখন রূপকথা অধ্যায় বা আমার সন্তান বিষয়ক কোন আগ্রহ ছিল না। কিন্তু এখন আমি অনুভব করি আমার মেয়েকে।

যখন আমি অনেক আনন্দ বা বেদনার সাথে থাকি আমার মেয়েকে অনুভব করি। তখন শুধূ মনে হয় মন খারাপ করার মতোন কিছু ঘটেনি। আমার মেয়ে আমার সাথে আছে। আমার সার্বক্ষণিক সঙ্গী।

এইযে এখন গভীর রাতে বসে বসে গান শুনছি আর মেয়েকে চিঠি লিখছি: এটা এক ধরনের আশ্রয়। আশ্রয়হীন মানুষ মাত্রই আঁকড়ে ধরে বাঁচি। আমার সন্তান: তোমার জন্য রেখে যাওয়া পৃথিবীটা হয়তো অনেক শীতল হবে! হয়তো বৈশ্বিক উষ্ণতার জন্য তুমি কষ্ট পাবে। আমাকে ক্ষমা করে দিও। একজন দুর্বল বাবা: তোমার জন্য ভালো একটা পৃথিবী বানাতে পারেনি!

আমি মালদ্বীপের মানুষদের হাহাকার শুনতে পাই, শুনতে পাই নিজের দেশের আর্তনাদ। কিছুই করতে পারছি না। একটা বড় দেহে পঁচন ধরেছে: থামাবার কোন উপায় নেই। বসে বসে একটা সুন্দর অনাগত স্বপ্নের মৃত্যুদৃশ্য দেখা!

অনেক দিন কিছু লিখি নাই। আজকে চেষ্টা করছি। দেখা যাক!

একটু আগ পর্যন্ত একটা হিন্দি সিনেমা দেখছিলাম “ওয়েক আপ সিড”। ভালো লাগল। অনেক দিন পর দেখা কোন হিন্দি সিনেমা। একটা বিত্তবান পরিবারের ছেলের বড় হয়ে ওঠার গল্প। মুম্বাইয়ের হাই সোসাইটি’র কচকচানি। খারাপ না। অবশ্য খোঁজ নেয়া দরকার এটা কোন ফিল্মের কপি। আমি বিশ্বাস করি না ইন্ডিয়ানদের মাথা থেকে এই আইডিয়া এসেছে। ইন্ডিয়া আর চায়না একই জাতি আসলে। একজন কপি করে প্রডাক্ট আর একজন আইডিয়া। Copied Ideas Changed their Life.

এখন আমি শুয়ে শুয়ে লিখছি বসার ঘরে। ঘুমাতে হবে। সকালে আমার মায়ের পাঠানো খাবার আনতে যেতে হবে শ্যামলী বাস কাউন্টার। অনেক আগে ঘুমাতে যাওয়ার কথা ছিল। হলো না। আমি এমনই। ৫ডিসেম্বর থেকে পাঠশালা (South Asian Institute of Photography) খোলা। সুতরাং আবারো ক্লাস। ক্লাশ খুলেই এসাইনমেন্ট জমা; বিষয় আত্মপ্রতিকৃতি। আমার সেল্ফ পোর্ট্রেট এখানে দিয়ে দিলাম।

ছবিটি কুড়িগ্রাম জেলার নাগেশ্বরী উপজেলা’র নুনখাওয়ার চর থেকে তোলা। এই ছবির এসিসট্যান্ট হিসেবে সহায়তা করেছেন ফটোগ্রাফার কার্লোস কাজালিস। এবার ওয়ার্ল্ডপ্রেস প্রথম পুরষ্কার জেতা এই ম্যাক্সিকান ফটোগ্রাফার সহ কুড়িগ্রামে ছবি তুলতে গিয়েছিলাম।
